The mouth is an extremely sensitive part of the body. Dental treatment of any kind requires taking extra after care of the area of operation.
After each stage of a root canal treatment, a few precautions should be taken:
– Until your root canal procedure is completely finished and the permanent filling or crown is placed, it is best to chew on the opposite side.
– After each appointment, the tooth may feel tender and/or sensitive for a few days due to natural tissue inflammation. This can usually be controlled with Panadol or Nurofen.
– If the temporary filling comes out before your appointment, it is important that you let contact us as soon as possible to avoid bacterial infection in the canal space.
Once the permanent crown or filling is is placed at the last appointment, you may eat, drink and clean your teeth just like you did before.
If you have any queries, or if the temporary filling comes off, please contact us on 9791 9688.
The healing process begins immediately after a tooth is extracted, as the body sends blood to nourish the tooth socket. The blood clot soon stabilizes, and acts as a framework for the later growth of new bone and new gum tissue in the area of the extraction. As the normal inflammatory process continues, some soreness and swelling can be expected.
“To Do”
- Apply direct pressure to the site, by firmly biting on a folded gauze pad. If the bleeding persists during the next few days, bite firmly on one of the gauze pads provided for 15-30mins.
- Apply ice packs to your face on the side of the extraction to help control swelling.
- A soft diet for the first few days after extraction will help to minimize irritation to the site.
- Take pain reducing medication as needed. This may be over-the-counter medicine or a specific prescription, depending on your situation. Warm salt water rinses, 4 – 5 times a day, starting 24 hours after the extraction, will help to keep the area clean and reduce the soreness.
“Not To Do”
- Do not smoke for at least 24 hours after an extraction. Smoking will interfere with early healing, cause persistent bleeding, and can cause infection and other problems.
- Do not rinse or spit for the first 24 hours. You do not want to dislodge the blood clot.
- Do not chew anything hard or crunchy in the area for 6 – 8 weeks. Do not brush your teeth in the immediate area of the extraction for the first 24 hours. Then, be a little gentle for the first few days to avoid trauma to the area. Of course, it’s very important to brush and floss normally everywhere else, and keep your mouth as clean as possible.

Upon leaving after the first visit, you will have a temporary dental crown on your
tooth. A few precautions should be taken:
– Avoid sticky or chewy foods (e.g. chewing gum, toffees), which have the
potential of pulling the crown off
– Shift the bulk of your chewing to the opposite side of your mouth
– Avoid chewing hard foods which can dislodge or break the crown
– When cleaning your teeth, slide the floss out to the side, rather than lifting it
up between the teeth.
You may eat immediately after the anaesthetic wears off. You may experience some
sensitivity around the tooth for up to a week, which is often relieved with toothpaste
for sensitive teeth.
If you have any queries, or if the temporary crown comes off, please contact us

Once the permanent crown is cemented on, you may eat, drink and clean your teeth
just like you did before.
