Dentures

Dentures (also known as false teeth) are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth; they are supported by the surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Dentures are typically removable (partial denture or complete denture), however there are many denture designs some which rely on bonding or clasping onto teeth or dental implants (fixed prosthodontics).

Teeth can be lost for a number of reasons ranging from old age, infections, gum disease, bad health or accident trauma.

Partial or Full denture?

A partial denture (usually removable) is made up of replacement teeth which is attached to a plastic base and sometimes connected by metal framework which holds the denture in the mouth.

There are numerous options for fitting which make for replacement with nearly invisible supporting plastic or metal frameworks. Implant-fitted dentures can be an ideal option, however the costs are significantly more than removable dentures.

A Full denture is a total replacement of the upper and/or lower teeth. This requires removal of any remaining teeth and a period of 2-3 months wait to allow the surrounding gum tissue to heal before a denture is placed in the mouth.

Denture care and maintenance

Dentures must be regularly cleaned to ensure they last as long as possible and avoid contamination in the mouth. A cleaning routine removes plaque and minimising odour.

First, brush the dentures using a soft-bristle brush soaked with water. Gently scrub all surfaces of the the denture to remove any debris and food particles. Ensure that you do not scrub too hard or bend any fittings on the denture.

After scrubbing, leave the denture to dry as this helps avoid bacterial growth.

If you notice any stubborn stains or discolouration you may need to bring the dentures in to be professionally cleaned by a dentist.

Adjustments

Over time if you notice that the dentures do not fit as well as they did originally, you can bring them back with your regular 6 month visit so the dentist can make minor adjustments as needed.
