Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS)

What is the Child Dental Benefits Scheme

Starting from 2014, the CDBS provides benefits to families supporting children who need access to basic dental care and essential services for a healthy teeth. It is aimed at families who are already received government benefits such as Family Tax Benefit Part A or Youth Allowance.

Who is eligible for CDBS

The CDBS is a government funded initiative which provides families with up-to $1,000 of dental allowance per child over a two year period. To access these benefits, your child must be:

  • Between 2 and 17 years old.
  • Eligible and enrolled in Medicare
  • A recipient of government payments (or be part of a family that does)

A detailed list of eligibility criteria can be found on the DHS website.

Eligibility is assessed at the beginning of the calendar year. You child must meet the requirements for at least one day of the year during the calendar year. If you or your child becomes eligible during the calendar year (for example, if your child turns 2 during the year), they will receive a payment for the whole year. If your child does not use the full $1,000 amount in the first year, the balance can be used in the second year if the child is still eligible.
